Press Release: Sierra Leone Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education Endorses Take Action Global’s Climate Action Project 2024
[Freetown, Sierra Leone] – September 10, 2024 – The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) in Sierra Leone has officially endorsed the Climate Action Project 2024, a free, six-week online program by Take Action Global. This initiative connects schools worldwide to tackle climate change and empowers students to become environmental leaders.
“Our world is already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change. Sierra Leone is amongst the top 10% of most vulnerable countries to this crisis, and we have already started experiencing its destructive impact across all areas of life” states the Honorable Conrad O. Sackey, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education. “Education is key to building our resilience and our capacity to respond. The Climate Action Project equips our students with the knowledge and skills they need to protect and adapt to our rapidly changing world.”
Aligning with Sierra Leone’s Educational Goals
The Climate Action Project aligns closely with the MBSSE’s recent push to advance efforts in building a climate-resilient education system. Starting on September 30th, this project will provide teachers and students with resources to deepen their understanding of climate change and inspire them to take action through tree planting or other creative community initiatives.
Joining a Global Movement
The Climate Action Project has already united 4.8+ million students from over 160 countries. Sierra Leone joins 16 other Ministries of Education who have endorsed this initiative. The project is free to register, flexible in terms of commitment, and open to all teachers and students across Sierra Leone, from pre-primary to university levels.
“We are thrilled to have the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education endorse the Climate Action Project,” says Koen Timmers, Co-Founder at Take Action Global. “This collaboration allows Sierra Leonean students to connect with a global community and become leaders in tackling climate change.”
